The UK/US-based information technology provider Experian has unveiled a new web-based consumer identification checking system called e-identity.

Designed to help financial service providers combat money laundering in Britain, e-identity accesses both Experian's consumer databases and public information to verify that the customer wanting to carry out an online credit card transaction really exists and also is who he/she claims to be. The system then provides the requesting company with a 'score' to the authenticity of the consumer, enabling the company to decide whether to proceed with the financial transaction, opening of a bank account or other commercial agreement.

E-identity is already in use in the retail and travel industry sectors. Pricing details were not revealed.
